We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the people who fell victim to the disaster of March 2011.
Damah Film Festival in Hiroshima is an international short film festival that started in December 2009 in Hiroshima city. Fukuyama city and Iwakuni city (Yamaguchi pref.) also joined last year. This year, it will be held in November and we're now calling for short films for participation in the competition.
We felt conflicted whether it would be appropriate to hold a festival in Japan, so soon after the country faced one of its most devastating catastrophe in the Tohoku region. We have discussed at length if it should be held this year or not.
Some people shared the opinion that we should refrain from holding or we should at least downsize the festival by showing only past works.
However, we believe that Damah Film Festival is a unique film festival in the world, having a specific theme and showing films that impress and touch the hearts of its audience.
The film festival with a theme of "Connecting Hearts to Hearts" should definitely be held, especially now when it holds great meaning and a message for the entire country.
Holding back would only be inconsequential. We would like to take this opportunity and see what this film festival can do for the country and the message conveyed through the power of these movies.
Also, what's important is that we continue, especially when Japan has to overcome this hard time by keeping our strength together. We believe that conveying our power and thoughts from Hiroshima to the disaster victims would give hope and encouragement to the people in the Tohoku region.
Last year, we received 79 short films from 7 countries including Japan and South Korea for the competition. We wonder what kind of films we will receive this year and how we will share this moment with our film lovers.
We look forward to sharing this inspirational and heart-warming event with you.
We hope you would understand the significance of this film festival and we would appreciate your support.
