
Directed his first feature film "The Lonely Heart's Club Band in September" in 1982. He was the first Japanese filmmaker to be invited to Sundance Institute hosted by Robert Redford. After returning to Japan, he directed "The Enchantment" and was invited to many film festivals. It was shown in theater in New York. "Rock in a Minor Key" in 1988, "Nurses" in 1993, "Shikoku" in 1999, and "Christmas in August" in 2005 are just a few of his notable works. In 2006, his "Heart, Beating in the Dark (new version)" was the opening film of International Film Festival Rotterdam and his thirteen films were shown there as a special program.His recent works include "The Witch of the West is Dead" in 2008, “Rashinban” and “Inu to anata no monogatari: Inu no eiga” in 2011.

Born in 1959, Tokyo. After graduating from university, he started drawing up scenarios, while working on an art crews in studios.
After winning an honorable mention in a scenario competition hosted by Director’s Company in 1984, he became a screenwriter for TV dramas and films. His works include “Asobi no Jikan wa Owaranai,” “Kokkai e Iko,” “SF Samurai Fiction,” “The Secret,” “ROCKERS,” “Yomigaeri,” “Your Friend,” “The Glorious Team Batista,” “ The Triumphant Return of General Rouge,” “ 252,” “April Bride,” and others.

In 1998, he founded Cross Media, Inc. and has produced “WHITEOUT” in 2000, “Minna no Ie” in 2001, “WASABI” in 2002, “Aegis” in 2005, “THE Wow-Choten Hotel” in 2006, “The Glorious Team Batista” in 2008, “The Triumphant Return of General Rouge” and so on.
He has been producing box-office hits. His latest films are “Rashinban” in 2011, “Second Virgin” in 2011.

November 7, 2011 Director Kaneto Shindo was invited to the “Damah Film Festival in Hiroshima” and he was looking forward to attending. Born in Hiroshima in 1912. In 1934, he entered the art department of Shinko Kinema Co.,
Ltd. where he studied under Kenji Mizoguchi.
In 1950, he left Shochiku Co., Ltd. and founded
Kindai Eiga Kyokai Co, Ltd. with Kozaburo Yoshimura and others.
In 1951, He directed "Aisai Monogatari (The Story of Beloved Wife)."
Thereafter, he worked
as a screenwriter and a film director.

1994: Participated in the establishment of Office Crescendo Inc. to expand his activities as a director.

He debuted as a professional actor on screen in “12 Japanese gentle men” (directed by Shun Nakahara) in 1991.
In the following year, he appeared in “Kirakira Hikaru” (directed by Joji Matsuoka), and “Kacho Shima Kosaku” (directed by Kichitaro Negishi).
As a result of playing these versatile roles, he was awarded prizes for the Best New Actor at the 14th Yokohama Film Festival and 16th Japan Academy Awards, and Best Supporting Actor at the 18th Osaka Film Festival.
From 1992-1993 he starred in the late-night drama “NIGHT HEAD” (CX) and garnered further attention and overwhelming support, notwithstanding the late night timeslot.
A role in the film “Love Letter” (directed by Shunji Iwai), and in the TV series drama “Aishiteiru to Itte Kure” (TBS) in 1995 were huge hits solidifying his popularity and reinforcing his skills, making him one of the representative actors of Japan.
In recent years, he appeared in the films “20th Century Boys Episode 1”, “20th Century Boys Episode 2”, and “20th Century Boys Final Episode”, directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, and in “Ichimai no Hagaki”, Kaneto Shindo’s newest film.

Joined NHK in 1992. His previous works include “Machiben” (2006) and “Hat” (2008) which won Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs National Arts Festival Gold Prize.
The 2009 film “Goldfish” won numerous awards such as the top prize at the National Arts Festival, the Golden Nymphs Award at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, and the Prix Italia (Outstanding Made-for-Television Movie). It also won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Art Encouragement New Face Award, for its remarkable video expression that is bold, simple and sensitive and depicts the depth of the warped human mind.
This year, he made his debut as director with “A Day in Winter”, and entered the world of feature length films with “Second Virgin”

He has also been involved in the production of TV commercials for SHISEIDO, KOSE, POLA, Nissan, Honda, UNIQLO, SUNTORY and so on. He received an ACC (All Japan Radio and Television Commercial Confederation) Encouragement Award of imaging techniques for game software “Gran Turismo 3 : A-Spec” released by SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment).
He supervised opening images of such games as “Shutoko Battle”, “Gaito Battle” and “Legend in Pass” released by Genki Co., Ltd.
He worked on promotion videos for Shonen Knife, ALvino and Jui (former member of a Japanese visual rock band VIDOLL), as a director and photographer.

Made his debut as a film director with "Seigyaku! Onna wo abaku" in 1982.
In 1993, his “Mao-gai, Sadistic City” won the Grand Prix in the video competition in Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival.
In 1994, his "800 TWO LAP RUNNERS" won the Agency For Cultural Affairs Film Award and others.
In 2003, his film "Vibrator" starring Shinobu Terajima was well received at home and abroad.
His recent works include, "Your Friend", and ”New Type〜tada ai no tameni” (2008).
“April Bride” (2009) attracted over two million people.
In 2010, his "A Lightning Tree" was screened at the BUSAN International Film Festival during the opening sessions.
His latest works are “Keibetsu” (2011), “RIVER”(2012), and short movie “ Kodomo no Mirai in Fukushima”(2012).
